Cake Decorating Idea

Gamer requested a cream filled chocolate cake with chocolate curls and strawberries for his 14th Birthday. I had no idea and no time for making chocolate curls, BUT I do know how to make Chocolate Leaves.

This post is a tutorial showing how to make chocolate leaves as your next cake decorating idea.

Do YOU have a favourite child?

Getting up on my soap-box here!

A popular Australian woman's magazine recently published an article that basically implied that we (parents of more than one child) are lying if we say we do not have a favourite child.

I am clearly stating for all the world to read that I DO NOT HAVE A FAVOURITE CHILD. And I am not a liar!

How ridiculous! The basis of this article is centred around the book The Sibling Effect by Jeffrey Kluger. Now, I have not read this book and I am only expressing my opinion based upon this article, yet I believe parents of more than one child need to stand together on this and let the real truth be known.

My Day

Warning: This is a long post!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I was inspired by a post from Confessions of a High-heel Wearing Hippie Mommy to write an outline of my day. She gives a glimpse into what it is like with Will (26 months old) and Evelyn and Ella (8 and a half months old) in her post "A Day In The Life: A Narrative. Or Maybe A Short Story". People told me it would get easier but at the time I just couldn't see how. I hope that by comparing our two stories of three-under-three at different stages, that you can see it does get easier. I hope it helps another Mummy of three-under-three see that "This too shall pass".

My Day With Three Under Three

Chook 32 months and two weeks. Strawberry and Ooffa 15 months and two weeks.

The Roller Coaster That Is My Life!

Tomorrow our family takes a huge step into the unknown. Again. In the last four years this family has taken three life-changing steps into the unknown. Huge steps. Leaps of faith even! Tomorrow marks the fourth.

Triple T Dad will start work with a huge company in the mining industry, which will require shift work. And more than likely it will be on-call shift work.

We are very fortunate that he has secured this position in the town we live and will not be fly-in/ fly-out. So we will still see him regularly. I can only guess, however, at the juggling of schedules that lies ahead!

With this news, comes my news...I have decided to not take on any relief teaching and I will be balancing life at home to try and make the ride as smooth as possible for the children, the tired and probably grumpy husband! I am also going to have to think really hard about returning to full-time teaching next year (when my leave ends). I have about 8 weeks left to make my decision, which gives us 8 weeks to ride what the new job throws at us!

So, to my new followers...Welcome aboard the roller coaster that is my life! To my dear loyal followers who have journeyed with me thus far...are you ready for the Loop-de-loop?

Sanity Tip of the Week: 15 Minutes

Sorry it has been a while. I think I should retitle to Sanity Tip of the Month!

Several years ago (when I was a full-time working mother of 1) I found the FlyLady web site and her tips really helped me get on top of organisation and establishing routines.

I have moved on since then...in many ways!!!! Several times I've ridden the dreaded slide down to disorganisation and returned to her site, however, it became less and less useful to me. I think the reason is, that I soon realised I have the tools and strategies that I need, I just need to use them! There isn't a site out there that is going to wave a magic wand and make it all happen. That is down to me!

Liebster Award!

Mother's Day. 2012. I receive an award.
Nope not Mother of the Year. Though I am sure I would have been a contender had I entered myself been entered.

I My blog has been awarded the Liebster Award! I love that it is an award given by other bloggers. To receive the award each blog must have less than 200 followers and you've got to be up for sharing some blog love around. So, it's a "Yes" and a "You betcha" from me.

A massive thank you to Plain Vanilla Mum who nominated me! If you haven't been over to Jen's blog, you must click the link and have a gander. My personal favourites would be anything under the label babycakes. There are lots of ideas for activities to try with bubs, once their taking on an interest in anything beyond food, sleep and elimination!

Chooki Give-away

THIS GIVE-AWAY IS NOW CLOSED

Recently the Chooki girls created these beautiful owl hats for the twiblings and a extra special surprise for Chook. You all know how much I love owls and I don't even stop when dressing my children in them! LOL! But they are adorable (and the children aren't too bad either)!

Chooki

There's a wonderful up and coming small business in my 'little' town of Esperance with the gorgeous name of Chooki. Each market Sunday they set up their little stall of handmade treasures and I have to admit, they are the main reason I get down to the markets. I love seeing the beautiful fabrics that they use to make the gorgeous items and I can't wait until Strawberry's walking so I can buy her one of those lovely summer dresses.

So who are the girls of Chooki? Well I recently got to know a little bit about them and I would love to share our chat with you all.

Guest Post @ Dirt and Boogers

I have the wonderful honour of guest posting over on Amanda's blog, Dirt and Boogers. Dirt and Boogers is a wonderful blog that inspires parents to encourage learning through play. As you know learning through play is the basis of my whole teaching and parenting philosophy. I especially love her page on 31 Days of Play. Check out her fabulous blog and browse around to see what inspires you!

How to Make Bath Bombs

How To Make Bath Bombs

Here's a simple Mother's Day Craft that my toddler and I did together. In this post I am giving you a tutorial on how to make bath bombs. Bath bombs have a rep for being difficult but with this recipe my toddler and I made an excellent batch. We made another batch which was a flop but we turned it into an on-the-spot science experience! Fizzy Playdough!

If a batch of bath bombs doesn't work out it comes down to the amount of water added. It only needs a few squirts. When my toddler was over-enthusiastic with the water spraying I spooned a bit of the mixture out into a seperate bowl and let him go for it.

Fun Activities For Toddlers

Our Weekly Rhythm: Planned Possibilities
Weekly Rhythm: Planned Possibilities is a new weekly post that is a review of our weekly activities. You will find lots of fun ideas for toddlers that you can do at home. We have characterised each day by something that happens on that day, this gives a predictable pattern for our week.

I posted have previously posted our weekly rhythm. The idea of having a rhythm comes from the works of Rudolf Steiner (a philosophy I loosely follow in my day-to-day life). The purpose of having a rhythm is to develop a sense of regularity to the day-to-day life of your child. Having a rhythm assists the development of confidence because your child 'knows' what's coming next.
I find that life is so much easier when Chook knows what's happening next. It is easier to talk with him about events because you only need to say "We go to the library after morning tea" or "After your bath, we get into our PJs and then it's time for Story Candle". This really helps his understanding that there is a process, that things don't just happen when you want them to happen. It is a good life lesson. The twins will naturally also benefit from having this in place.
Fun Activities for Toddlers
Our theme is:
Birthdays
Monday is Story Day
Our story was Happy Birthday Lulu!
Wednesday is Play Day
Card making. In the Birthday Exploration box is card and stickers. Chook had many opportunities to create cards. We also made a card with a footprint from each child, using a paint pad.
Friday is Discovery Day

This week we added coloured rice to the Birthday Exploration box, a scoop and a bowl. Chook spent a bit of time transferring rice from the exploration box to the bowl using a scoop. When no more rice could be scooped he poured the rest into the bowl. Chook commented that pouring rice sounds like rain. Hmmmm...that gives me an idea. Let's make Rain Makers!
Saturday is Game Day
Gamer and Chook played some running games today. A favourite would have to be chasey! I came across two great outside games to play over at Creative Family Fun. Both of these games will help develop listening skills and following directions. Click on the link to check them out!
Sunday is Family Day
Sorry there are no photos of this activity. My camera went stupid on me and I had to format the memory card, losing all the photos of this activity :(

We made fizzy playdough! We had a lot of fun making this stuff. What a fun activity for an older toddler! It is a one off activity, that is you have to make it from scratch everytime, as it won't keep as playdough. The essence is just adding the smell dimension to the experience.

On your marks...
1 cup of bicarbonated soda
1 x 75g container of citric acid
Several drops of essence of your choice (optional)
Small chunk of cocoa butter
Spray bottle with water

Get set...
Explain to your child that this is not edible and hands need to be kept away from mouth and eyes. It doesn't taste nice and stings the eyes. Wash eye with water if some makes it way there.

Go...
Measure the bicarbonated soda into a bowl. Add the entire contents of the citric acid. Add several drops of essence if using. Grate the cocoa butter over the ingredients and mix well.

Your toddler can do this bit: While you are mixing the ingredients together, have your toddler spray a couple of spurts (set to fine mist spray) of water into the mix. The mix is ready if it looks like slightly damp sand. If too much water is added it will turn into a fizzing mess and you wont get to play with it...but it's still fun!

When you scoop this stuff up in your hand, squash it into a ball and then flatten out on the table. The warmth from your hand softens the cocoa butter making it maleable. Now your toddler still has that spray bottle and is probably spraying the cat so direct their spray over to the table. Watch what happens as the water lands on the dough...fizzy playdough. Your toddler can press and shape this stuff and spray until their little hearts are content!

Come back on Tuesday to check out what else we are doing with this stuff! I promise there will be photos!

Sharing the fun with:

Are you enough? Yes, you are!

Sometimes I am so tired, I can't be all I can be. I start thinking I am not doing enough around the home or with the children. When I am tired the energy levels are low, my tolerance for toddler antics is low and things seem to get on top of me real fast. Steiner talks about young children consuming etheric or life energy from their parents during the first three years of their lives. Think of it as being interconnected with your child. Think of it as if they are drawing energy from you just like they once drew energy from you when they were in your womb. When I mentioned this to a friend of mine she likened it to an experience where she got so much done one morning and still had lots of energy compared to other mornings, and then she realised her little one was out with daddy that morning.

Mothers of young children (under three) can probably relate to this energy drain. Sometimes that energy drain is so severe you feel as though you've been taken to the brink, looked over the edge and realised you've got no more to give. That's why we need to replenish this energy. When you are looking over the edge that negative voice starts and you are not strong enough to fight it. Words spoken by others suddenly take a whole new meaning. Their words become sharp and make you feel inadequate, even though that is not what the person is intending.

It is easy to feel that you are not enough when you are drained of your energy. To feel that you are trying your best but getting nowhere. As a breastfeeding mum it is easier to have people understand your lacking in energy and need to rest. It is a lot more difficult to get people to understand that need for recharging when your children are seemingly separate from you(unless their mothers of young children themselves!). Communicate with your close family and friends. Share with them how you are feeling physically and emotionally. Reduce the amount of activities you do outside of the home. Rest when the children rest or enforce a quiet time in the afternoon. Go to bed before 10pm at night. What other things could you do that would take the pressure off you and allow you to recharge?

Teenagers also experience an energy drain. They reach a stage of development where they need sleep like a young toddler, at least 14 hours a day. But this is the time that they start staying up late! It might be for study, chatting with friends, sport training sessions, after school commitments or gaming/computer use. Added to this, school starts early in the morning and the result is that so many of our teens are just not getting enough sleep.

Around this time many teens start to feel that they are inadequate. They compensate by trying to prove that they are not. Self-esteem can hit an all time low. Could it be that their energy tank is low?

Teens and young adults need to hear that they are enough. Imagine the boost to self-esteem if those they love and respect thought that they were enough, just as they are!

I knew Steve was the one for me because with him I felt that I was enough. When you feel that you are enough, you realise that there are no strings, no conditions, no expectations. Just as you are, you are enough. This is the essence, I believe, of unconditional love.

Our marriage is blessed with four beautiful, healthy children. The wonderful experience of family is that everyday they make you feel that you are enough.

A few signs that you are enough (by no means a complete list):

Actions speak louder than words!
It is the way a child cuddles into you.
The touch as they go past you on the way to somewhere else.
That beaming smile that is just for you.
When they babble away to you, secure in the knowledge that you know exactly what they are telling you!
When they want you to join in with their play.
They listen to you and they share snippets of their thoughts with you.

I dearly wish that I communicate to my children that they are enough. I worry about my relationship with my teen. I wonder with all the chore reminders, the disappointment when things are not followed through in the way I wish and the times I get upset because he lets his hobby take over his entire day, whether he knows that I still think he is enough.

I worry about my relationship with my toddler. He's a feisty one! He has such a strong resolve and stands firm on how he wants things to be. It's going to take a lot of love with this one! Today I stood back from a situation where we normally would have locked horns and I thought to myself 'I've got to stop doing this! This approach is just not right with his personality. It is not communicating the right message and that's why we're not getting anywhere!'

It comes back to loving unconditionally. It comes down to discipline in a loving way. In a way that says "You are enough, I just don't like what you are doing".

What are the signs that say 'You know you are enough'? Please add to the comments below!

The Perfect Birthday Gift

©2010 JD Digi Designs
Today is my 38th Birthday. There are no big plans. There is nothing that I want for my birthday...except maybe a washing machine. Now white goods are not my kind of present. Not only do they tend to symbolise a mother's 'place' in the home but the selection of a white good is very personal. To me white goods need to be carefully selected and must suit their intended purpose for the person to whom they will belong. How many bread makers, juicers, bread knifes, etc have you seen at garage sales?

15 years ago I informed my husband-to-be that a happy marriage would involve thoughtful gifts, with meaning and under no circumstances, would white goods be accepted! I think the thinking behind it, is that I am more than my role at home and white goods symbolise housework. And I don't DO housework. I don't enjoy housework. I don't love housework. I do it because I HAVE to. I would rather play.

So why now? A washing machine? Well, friends, my washing machine has upped and died on me. Granted it is six years old, works under hard water conditions and probably should have had better maintenance (attention) paid to it (Who has the time?)! Granted it has washed daily for 32 months straight. But give a mother a break! On my birthday!

©2010 JD Digi Designs
So I am getting a washing machine for my birthday. Yay.

What do I really want?

Time. Huh?!?

Time to just do what I want to do. Time to craft, or read, or bake something other than 'normal' food. Time to sleep-in or have a long soak in a bath. Time to think. Time to say hi to me. Time to contemplate, make plans or dream.

But most of all for my birthday I want time to just spend with my children without having to change a nappy or make snacks or leave the play to attend some other bit of family life. I want to roll around on the floor with them and giggle and play. I want to share my time with them. Just them. That would be the perfect present!
