This week I decided to look more closely at the possibilities offered by the humble sandpit. Our sandpit is used all the time. It has been easier to just let them go for it and after a while everything gets dumped in there. I thought I would clean it up and add some new things that would suggest new play possibilities.

When Chook first saw the new arrangement of the sandpit, he was quite hesitant and kept asking "What's it from?" I was surprised by his reaction. I had expected him to just dive right in there and start playing with the sea creatures. Instead he took his time.
First he carefully walked along the plank.

| He took a look over the wall. |
 |
| Great balancing Chook! |
He found a sea horse in the water. We have been reading Puff The Magic Dragon for story candle. He started singing the first verse of the story!
 |
| "Like a dragon, Mummy!" |
Chook discovered the plastic plumbing tubes that I had placed in the sand toy box. These were meant for another activity but I wanted to see what he would do with them in this context.
 |
| He put the sea creatures into the tubes. |
 |
| He built towers. |
 |
| He looked through the tube at the sea creatures. |
 |
| He put lots of sea creatures into the small tube. |
 |
| He put his fingers under the bottom so the sea creatures wouldn't fall out. |
 |
| He tried to empty them into the longer tube. But found it easier to put them in with his hands. |
He wanted to go fishing. So I found a stick and some string, made a noose and we tried to go fishing by putting the noose over the sea creature. This is very difficult! And the noose wouldn't slide when it was wet. It was too challenging, so before the activity turned into tears I placed the sea creature in the noose and he was quite happy to 'fish'.

| I wonder where he learnt to cast? |

What a fantastic sandpit. It has definitely given me some ideas for creating a sandpit in our backyard.
ReplyDeleteI always wanted a sandpit and then this space cropped up under our patio, supposed to be a bed for plants, I said "No way! That would make a great sandpit". And here it is :)
ReplyDeleteWow! What fun! Maybe I need to talk my hubby into creating a sandpit. Love the plank! So many fun things going on in that sand pit! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how you may introduce one thing to a child and it leads to something different and creative. Thanks for sharing !!
